Worth watching for anyone that wrenches on vehicles...

And, here's one just for fun. Ouch. Talk about blowing your guts out...

MTU 8V 396 diesel engine catastrophic failure

Quote
This is a MTU 8V 396 diesel engine blowing up. This video was shown during a rebuild class I just took. Not really sure what happened. My guess would be that it spun a bearing, causing a piston to try and sieze, in turn throwing a rod. Pay attention at 24 seconds to the engine torquing hard to the left and the terrible sound it makes until it lets go...

I'm beginning to lose my patience with this Subaru.

Went to change the axle shaft today and the pinch bolt for the lower ball joint wouldn't break loose. I could turn the head with a socket on a breaker bar, but the bolt itself wasn't turning and it felt pretty rubbery. This is a bad, bad sign. I heated things up with a propane torch and applied some candle wax, but that didn't work and all I ended up doing was burning holes in both the outer CV joint boot and the lower ball joint boot. Finally ended up twisting the bolt off - it broke flush with the head so it still won't come apart. By the looks of it, it might have been a defective bolt or had been partially broken when it was installed at the factory.

I tried removing the ball joint from the lower A-arm so I could at least swap out the axle and deal with the bolt and ball joint later, but even with a big prybar and a hammer it wouldn't come loose.

I gave up on it for the night. Tempted to bolt things back together tomorrow and let someone else deal with it. I do know it won't run very long with a hole in the outer CV joint boot before that joint fails.

Totally disgusted.

1943 Volkswagon Type 66 Schwimmwagon

Exactly 15,125 VW Type 166 better known as Schwimmwagen were manufactured during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, all the vehicles that could be found were crushed or used for target practice by the Allied Forces. Consequently only 125 or so examples survive today. This example has been totally restored to as new condition. It has placed first in all shows it was entered in, except one. I have a complete history of the restoration of this car available to any interested parties. Probably the nicest example of this very rare piece of 20th century military history that you are going to find. Willing to trade for Ferrari 550 Barchetta.
