Portland, Maine?
« on: July 07, 2010, 05:17:36 AM »

Where do I go to stuff my fat face with seafood?

They need to have non-fish stuff for whiny children and also some non-breaded, gluten-free stuff.  Dives are welcomed.  Long waits and high prices are not.

Thanks in advance.

Love,

Me

P.S.  Geoff - I already searched the archives and Duckfat is on the list.

J's Oyster for Seafood
DiMillo's - food is decent, nothing too special, but the kids get a kick out of eating on a boat
Gritty McDuff's, Sebago Brewing Co, Sea Dog or Stone Coast for microbrews and pub fare
Becky's Diner for breakfast

You've already mentioned Duckfat, but if you and the Mrs. want a nice dinner without the kids, and you're willing to pry open your wallet, Hugo's is the place.

When are you going to be in town?

2nd week of August.  Staying in New Hamster - day trip to Portland.  Doesn't even have to be Portland but that's been the plan thus far.

Get there a week earlier, and we'll ditch the wimmenfolk and kids and get a good drink on.

Where are you staying in NH?

If I could go  drinking sightseeing a week earlier, I would.  The schedule's set, though.  I like getting wobbly in new and interesting places.

Thanks for the recommendations!  Glad you mentioned J's.  It was on No Reservations and looks like my kind of place.  A friend was there last week and liked it, too.

We're staying near Lincoln.

Got home Saturday night.  Managed to once again slack on any GTG's.  Missed Lee in NH and drove past Ertz's house at 8pm Saturday.

Buffalo, NY - as much of a hole as last time I was there.  Stayed at the Adam's Mark hotel downtown.  Apallingly filthy.  Ate/drank at the Pearl Street Grill and Brewery.  WORST BEER EVER.  Disgusting.

NH - great time at the wife's uncle's cabin.  The place is amazing.  Spooky quiet and no neighbors in sight.  Mountains, pond, deck, beer, 'nuff said.

Did an hour up/back on the section of the Appalachian Trail that runs through the area.  Rocky and steep.  Cool to see the AP in person.  Did the Flume Gorge at FNSP, too.  Very cool.

Polly's Pancake Parlor - Sugar Hill, NH.  Holy freakin' crap, this place is awesome.  Waited 1.5 hours to eat breakfast and it was absolutely worth it.  I can't imagine there's a better pancake in the world than this place.  Corn meal and coconut was mind-blowing.  Bacon was the best ever.  EVER!

Portland, ME

Duckfat.  Awesome fries, amazing cold cucumber soup and Orangina.
J's Oyster - Great dive.  Sat outside by the dock.  Dissapointed in the oysters.  Dirty shells and some really small ones.  Oyster crackers instead of saltines?  Friendly service.
Pierhead light - cool place.  Small, rocky (duh) beach, dead baby seal!

Montreal, QC  - just a drive-by from the expressway on the South side of town.  Every highway, ramp, overpass and bridge look like they date from 1950.  Yeesh.  Hoping/assuming this is the bad side of town.

Toronto - reminds me of Chicago, but slightly cleaner.  Loved the streetcars.  People are nice.  More smelly people than Chicago and the homeless are crazier.  Toronto Islands, Steam Whistle Brewery, Chinatown, Harbourfront Centre - all cool.  Lots of new construction and lots of existing and people reslly seem to love high rise living, even in the suburbs.  Weird.  Had some killer Pho at a place in Chinatown.  The St. Lawrence market is awesome.

Forgot - went to the Cabot annex in VT, too.  Bought all different kinds of cheese.  Chili Lime is awesome, as is the Habanero.  Yee haw!

I usually have a piece or two a day. Cheese is good stuff.
Usually have a cup of yogurt, too.
